Carrots are portrayed as a rabbit’s favourite food to eat, right? Does this mean you should be giving your rabbits lots of carrots? Can rabbits eat carrots without getting sick?
Rabbits do like carrots, yes, and they can eat them. They do not eat them nearly as much in the wild as portrayed to us. Vegetables should only make up a small amount of their overall diet. Around 15%, which is a large cup full of vegetables a day.
The bulk of their diet is made up from Timothy hay. A nutritional hay that’s great for their digestive system as it’s high in fiber and provides the roughage they need. You should also be giving them some pellets which are packed with nutrition too, along with fresh water to keep them hydrated.
When introducing new foods always try a small amount first and see how you bunnies react. If you notice they have a stomach upset then stop feeding them carrots immediately and keep them on hay and pellets until they are back to normal.
