If you are using fresh carrots in your cooking you are probably cutting the tops off and throwing them away. Or, maybe giving them to your rabbits. Rabbits love carrots, everyone knows this. What most people don’t know is that carrots are not as good for rabbits as you may think.
Vegetables need to be given to rabbits in moderation as they do have a sugar content which can cause some digestive problems. Make sure you wash the carrots tops as well before giving them to your bunnies as they probably have pesticides on that are also potentially harmful.
You shouldn’t be giving your bunnies more than a cup full of fresh veggies a day. They will mostly eat Timothy hay and some pellets that are specially formulated for rabbits. Veggies help give them more well-rounded nutrition, and the occasional treat is fine.
When introducing new foods, even safe ones, always start with a small amount. Check your rabbits are happy and not showing any ill-effects before giving them some more.
